Approximately half of the individuals in the United States are buried in cemeteries.
However, our story is set in Brazil, where “the taste for the individual burial had become an essential
reference for Brazilian urban elites” in the second half of the nineteenth century.
One day, while passing by a tomb, a Cemetary laborer in Brazil was
minding his own business and performing his job when he heard a strange sound.
Even someone who works in a cemetery would probably be alarmed if they heard a noise
emanating from a tomb. After all, why wouldn’t your first idea be “zombies” or “ghosts?”
Luckily, this Brazilian man was not terrified. Instead, he went near enough to hear a cat trapped within the tomb.
The cemetery obtained permission from the family to uncover the grave and enlisted the
help of a local animal rescue group. A group of individuals was determined to save the cat!
One especially courageous volunteer climbed into the tomb’s depths and rescued the kitten alive.
The kitten was not silent about the predicament, but luckily it was just a little dehydrated,
and no significant damage was done to the kitty or the family’s final resting place in the tomb.
Surprisingly, the animal rescue group involved in the rescue thought that the kitten’s mother had
most likely hidden her newborn in the tomb for safekeeping but had been unable to return to her child for various reasons.
However, don’t attempt this in your neighborhood cemetery. You never know what you’re going to come upon.
