A hero dog waited with a friend for at least SIX HOURS after it was hit by a car on a motorway.
The young pup, who was later named Corey, was spotted in Texas by a local mail carrier on the morning of March 19.
Unable to get Corey and his hurt friend help, he posted a message on Facebook alerting the local community.
Samantha Zimmer, an accountant from Houston, happened to see the Facebook post and decided to go and help the dog and his injured pal.
Accompanied by her fiancé, George, the 36-year-old drove for close to an hour towards Dayton when she came across Corey, lying on the road.
Matthew was lying nearby in a ditch.
Corey was initially wary but was won over by a can of sausages.
After he was secured, Samantha and George went to recover the tail-wagging Matthew from the ditch.
As the ditch was holding water, George had to lift Matthew out onto the bank before he could be put on the pallet of blankets waiting for him in the car.
Samantha explained: “When we headed out to find these dogs, we knew we might not make it in time.
“We were so relieved to see that Corey had stayed with Matthew and that, despite his injuries, he was still breathing normally, wagging his tail and happy to see us.
“Matthew yelped in pain but never once tried to bite, that’s how sweet he is – we knew then that he was a fighter, and we had a chance of saving him.
“We instantly hurt for him, it’s clear he had been suffering from neglect long before he was actually hit by the car.”
The dogs were then taken to Houston to receive medical care.
Matthew had a fractured radius in his front right arm, right femoral head and a cracked front canine as well as being covered in road rash and fleas.
Both dogs are currently being fostered separately through a non-profit rescue called Lola’s Lucky Day whilst they begin the long road to recovery and finish their medical treatments.
They are currently in the process of approving an adopter in Wisconsin who is excited to adopt them both.
As a foster for Lola’s Lucky Day, Samantha shares all her rescue stories online to help bring awareness to the issue of homeless animals in Texas.
She also generates donations for the medical care of dogs and ultimately find them great adoptive homes.
The reaction to their rescue has been positive, with people wanting to help and donate from all over the world.
However, some viewers expressed their disappointment after finding out that Matthew and Corey were being fostered in different homes.
Samantha emphasized that there are such limited foster spaces in Houston and that their priority was to put them in the best foster homes for their medical needs.
She added: “Matthew and Corey are both thriving.
“While they definitely got along great when they were homeless, they are not sad whatsoever in their foster homes.
“They have won the hearts of everyone who meets them with their appetite for joy and life.
“We are so excited to be able to share our love for rescue animals with such a huge community.
“We couldn’t have picked a more deserving pair to rescue than Matthew and Corey!”
