James White was fishing in Sonoma County, California when he felt a tug at the line. But it wasn’t what he thought. He would spend the next 10 minutes fighting to reel it in, and on the end of the hook, he saw a 6-foot-long shark!
He quickly tried to remove the hook from the shark, but the beast fell to the ground and bit into his ankle.
“Immediately there was blood everywhere, the first bite punctured an artery. The pressure was intense,” James said in a statement to NBC Bay Area.
James called out for help, and his 1-year-old Pit Bull puppy, Darby, responded. The dog was waiting by their parked car a few yards away when he heard the commotion and came running to save his human. Darby bit into the shark, but this made the shark bite down even harder on his dad.
“I told him, ‘No, back off,’” James continued. “And then he repositioned and grabbed it by the tail. He literally ran up the hill with it and pulled it off my leg.”
Now James was free from the mouth of the beast and able to throw the shark back into the water. This could’ve ended very badly if not for this hero of a dog named Darby!
